A small room and a big dream — RANI RAVINDRAN, KAR & RAVINDRAN SILK COTTON
“I am a homemaker from Periyakulam, a small town in Tamil Nadu with just over forty thousand people. I’ve always wanted to do something meaningful to become a role model for my children. A friend suggested that I could convert my hobby into an online business. So, I started selling wooden toys and cotton pillows on Amazon, from one small room that my mother-in-law gave me. While my friend helped me understand online selling, every order taught me something new as well!
Today, my family, especially my kids are proud of what I’ve achieved. Everyone knows me as Periyakulam’s first Amazon seller. I’ve also started helping many women set up their business online. From making my children proud, to helping women build their businesses, I’m grateful that today I’m able to inspire the people in my life.” — This is my story. I am Rani Ravindran.
Odisha’s handcrafted wonders — Biswajit Swain, HAASTIKA HANDICRAFTS
“I joined the IT sector as a software professional just like every other engineering graduate, but my heart was always at home, in Odisha. I wanted to work for its artisans and their crafts. In 2015, I spent months with them to understand their lives and their craft. Knowing exactly what they needed, I decided to leave my job and set up our craft store Haastika on Amazon. This gave our artisans the opportunity to sell their work to buyers beyond Odisha. Today, our artisans lead a more sustainable life and also help preserve their craft’s legacy. When I look back, I’m left with no regrets about leaving my job. Starting Haastika has been one of the best decisions of my life.” — This is my story. I am Biswajit Swain.
